Theme Breakdown
moonlight's history starts with a theme for StepMania 4 CVS called "dubaiOne". Since that takes forever to get into, let's just say that moonlight had the first proper implementation of CustomSpeedMods in StepMania 5, as well as some theme customization options.
Overall
A long time ago, moonlight was the example of how to make a StepMania 5 theme. Of course, I am highly biased, but the theme took advantage of a number of things that you just couldn't do in previous StepMania versions. Nowadays, there are a number of themes that do some of the things moonlight does... sometimes even better!
Select Music
Music selection is mostly normal, except then you have to factor in the ability to change what information appears in the left frame...
Player Options
Player options in moonlight are pretty standard.
Gameplay
Gameplay has most information on the top, but the player options and BPM are on the bottom.
Evaluation
Evaluation is pretty bare bones.
